Success Story
Aubrey Maslen, the 2009 New Mexico Youth of the Year worked for several years in the Club library. One young member benefited tremendously from his mentoring. Anthony was very disrespectful to both members and staff alike. He was especially rude to female staff, and when asked about it, said that he did not have to listen to any women. Aubrey took Anthony on as a project and worked with him to show how Anthony's behavior to other members and staff resulted directly in to negatives that he encountered. Over time, Anthony became much more respectful of other members, was able to work with them cooperatively, and did not encounter the kind of negative reaction and hostility he had at first caused for himself. In addition, he learned that all people should be respected, regardless of gender. Today, Anthony is a valuabe helper in the library and helps to work with other members.
