Specialized Programs

These initiatives or programs focus on meeting significant, specific needs that have been identified within the Boys & Girls Club Movement. Because their scope is broad, they relate to or complement several or all of the five Core Program Areas.

  • DIVERSITY INITIATIVE:        Boys & Girls Clubs of America has joined forces with the Anti Defamation League (ADL) to teach young people and youth development professionals to promote diversity and combat prejudice, bigotry and discrimination. Developed with support from Joel E. Smilow, B&GCA governor and retired chairman and CEO of Playtex Products, the diversity initiative is based on ADL’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE program.
  • GLOBAL TRIPPIN':  A program that takes members on a journey through the country, geography, history, language, art, and culture of other peoples.  members do internet research, learn to play games, cook foods, learn words, do art projects, and engage in a variety of other learning opportunities.

  • NET SMARTZ:          NetSmartz, a comprehensive program from BGCA and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, teaches members Internet safety skills through engaging multimedia activities and offline interaction with Club professionals, in three age-appropriate modules: Clicky’s Web World for 6- to 7-year-olds, NetSmartz Rules for 8- to 12-year-olds and I-360 for 13- to 18-year-olds.
  • CORE TECH:            Core Tech is a collection of five guides filled with technology-related activities that Club staff from each Core Program Area can use with members. Each guide contains activities for incorporating technology into one Core Program Area, along with reference guides for the software applications needed to complete them.

  • DIGITAL ARTS SUITE:         An exciting series of programs in technology and the arts covering such topics as digital moviemaking, graphic design, photography, Web design and development, and digital music. With these programs, any Club with a tech center can offer members aged 6 to 18 an unprecedented opportunity to become not just consumers of art and high-tech information, but producers of their own content.

The unique, age-appropriate courseware for each program leads members through the processes. Each program includes interactive simulations, step-by-step lessons and project ideas for every skill level. And because the courseware teaches the technical aspects of these digital arts, staff members can focus their efforts on helping members unleash their creativity and determine content for their projects, providing guidance and support for members’ work.

  • ANIMATE YOUR WORLD:              Animate Your World: Shaping Character is a fun, innovative and unique CD-ROM program designed by the Cartoon Network. The program provides members with the tools they need to create their own custom animation using positive character traits and behaviors learned through the countless activities and resources found on the CD-ROM. Animate Your World will help staff incorporate character education and computer skills into their Club programs.
